As we enter into our Christmas and New Year break, I look back on some magical moments this term and reflect on what good progress our children have made. The nativity for Reception and Key Stage One was a real highlight and all of our children did a remarkable job at being on stage in front of a huge audience of parents and family members. The Christmas craft afternoon was also a fantastic chance to showcase our children's creativity skills.  A big thank you to all the parents and family members who attended this also. Of course, one of the best days of the year is the whole school trip to the panto. This again did not disappoint and all the children were fully immersed in a land of bad jokes, fabulous dancing and crazy antics. It was brilliant!

I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We look forward to seeing the children return on Tuesday 6th January.

EYFS

This term reception have been exploring all different kinds of celebrations. We have talked about Diwali, Hannukah, Christmas and even celebrated Mog's birthday! Our children have been working so hard on their reading and writing and we are very proud of the progress we have made. We have especially enjoyed our visit to St Mary's church to learn about weddings. We are grateful to the time of the volunteers as they provided us with crafts, dressing up and even helped us to role play a wedding so we knew what happened and why. As we move towards the end of our first full term at school we have been excited to role play christmas adventures and to learn to sing our production songs. Next term we will explore our local area more, enjoying alternative fairytales, map making and learning about the changes we see during the spring.

Year 1

We continue to work hard In Year 1 and we have been learning lots.

In Science we have been learning about Materials and we enjoyed sorting objects into the material they are made from. We managed to find the same item made of different materials such as wooden and plastic pegs, and some objects made of 2 materials.

In our ICT lessons we have enjoyed familiarising ourselves with the laptops and have become more confident in using our own log in details to access the laptops. We have been learning about how the track pad works, as lots of us are used to touch screen devices it has been a bit tricky to start with. We have also started to learn about the keyboard, we don’t let the fact that it is all in capital letters confuse us! We have been learning how to make digital artwork using a website called paintz.app, selecting the appropriate tools to help us with artwork inspired by the likes of Piet Mondrian and Henri Matisse.

Of course, the end of term brings lots of lovely things such as our trip to Panto. Miss Willoughby and the other grown-ups who came to help us were very proud of us as we used our careful listening ears to make sure we all had fun! It is amazing how exciting a bus trip to Wellingborough can be! Thanks to the parents who gave up their Friday afternoons to come with us, we couldn’t have done it without you! We also have our Nativity show and we are excited to show our grown-ups our lovely singing and of course, we hope we win the cuteness factor with our Nativity costumes too! It has been a great opportunity to work with our Reception and Year 2 friends too.

Year 2

Well what very busy a term it’s been! In our Literacy the children started the term by completing an independent write on ‘If I was in charge of the School’ and ‘If I was in charge at home.’ The children absolutely loved this unit and came up with some very original ideas! Maybe we should let them be in charge for a day! ?? Following this, we have been learning about the story ‘Stardust.’ This has been a very magical story that the children have enjoyed. We are currently retelling this story for our independent write.

In Science, the children have been learning about properties of materials and have really enjoyed making boats. They have had to test a variety of different materials to decide which would be best to make a boat and then test their boat out to see whether it would stay afloat!

History has also been very exciting and we have been learning about ‘A History of Flight.’ We saw a quite amusing video about some very first flight attempts and learnt the story of the ‘The Wright Brothers’ who were the first people to design and fly a plane that flew for 12 seconds! This was truly a ‘historically significant event’ that paved the way for further flight enthusiasts that the children have learnt about such as Amelia Earhart, Bessie Coleman and Neil Armstrong! We created some freeze frames of ‘The Wright Brothers’ flying their plane for the very first time. (See our photos!)

Finally, its been a very busy and exciting lead up to Christmas. The children really loved their Christmas Craft morning with everyone and we have been very busy practising our ‘Whoops A Daisy’ Nativity, which we can’t wait to share with you all.

We hope you all have a fantastic Christmas holiday and a good rest in time for the New School Year!

                                                  Year 3 and 4

Year 3-4 have been working hard on our DT unit this term - Seasonal foods and cooking. We have learned lots about when different foods grow, which countries our foods come from and the benefits of eating seasonally. Most of all we have had lots of fun tasting new foods and cooking. We tasted all sorts of herbs, vegetables and sauces to help us build a seasonal tart recipe. Along the way we have learned how to use knives to chop safely, how to make pastry and how to follow a recipe. We have finished the unit by making some seasonal mince pies to share with parents, to showcase our new skills.

Year 4 and 5

We have had a busy term in our maths lessons, working on fractions and now we have moved onto our multiplication and division unit. The children have been encouraged to use TTRockstars at home to practise their times tables and corresponding division facts to help speed up their calculations.

In Literacy the children have been working on non-fiction texts using examples of non-chronological reports on penguins to write their own reports on polar bears. They have researched their own information for the different paragraphs and learned how to set out a report. We have linked their work back to the previous half term’s work on the environment to extend their knowledge about caring for the world around them. Environmental issues are also being explored in our Geography lessons where we are learning about renewable and non-renewable energy use around the world.

Science has focussed on physics, specifically air resistance, friction and gravity. This has been useful in our P.E. lessons for netball and fitness! Our built in ‘brain breaks’ have also been based on movement – Danny Go on youTube being a popular choice of activity. Ask your children to show you Danny Go, but be warned, some of the tunes tend to get stuck in your head!

We are looking forward to our new History and Science topics in January. Have a wonderful Christmas break.

Year 5 and 6

Thank you to everyone who came to join in with bauble making, it was a great success and a very enjoyable afternoon. We have been doing some poetry in reading with Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes. This has given us the opportunity to work on different characters and sequencing stories. In Maths we have been back to fractions as well as going back to different types of multiplication and division.

Writing has taken us from a non-chronological report on an animal of the children’s choice to a narrative concentrating on setting a scene and a character description of what life could be like if they have a disfigurement. This has linked closely to PSHE and being inclusive of everyone. We are also looking at how to cope with people who do not have the same opinion as us in PSHE. Learning that it is ‘ok’ to not always have to agree with someone, it is what makes us different.

In Science, we have been looking at forces. We have investigated air resistance, water resistance, gravity, friction, levers and pulleys. Though it may not have been the most reliable tests we had great fun and learnt how things should have worked.
